Veterinarian's Review

Veterinarian's Review by Dr. Robert Boswell

MyoGesic-CS pain relieving spray.  A unique topical solution combining Menthol and Pramoxine HCL with natural anti-inflammatories and analgesics.

The first natural active ingredient in MyoGesic-CS is Menthol. Menthol is a commonly used active ingredient in other pain relieving products and, in many, the only active ingredient. Its cooling sensation when applied topically or taken orally is well known and has been shown to reduce pain by stimulating the skin's cold receptors. Menthol also produces local vasodilation which may facilitate the absorption of some substances across the skin's surface.

The second active ingredient, unique to MyoGesic-CS, is Pramoxine HCL. Pramoxine is widely used as a topical anesthetic to treat burns, insect bites and skin reactions to irritating plant oils. It works by stabilizing the nerve cell membrane responsible for pain sensation so that pain impulse conduction is reduced.

A review of other inactive natural ingredients in MyoGesic-CS,and a brief description of their effects are listed below:
  1. ARNICA (Arnica montana), has been used for medicinal purposes since the 1500's. The roots of Arnica montana contain derivatives of Thymol, which appear to have anti-inflammatory properties and have been clinically shown to be vasodilators of subcutaneous capillaries. It is widely used to provide relief from the pain and inflammation resulting from bruises, sprains, as well as other muscle and joint problems.
  2. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), is structurally related and a metabolite of DMSO. MSM is also claimed to be a natural source of biologically active sulfur. It has been used in both human and animal osteoarthritic products.
  3. BOSWELLA (Boswella serrata) has traditionally been used for a variety of conditions including arthritis, ulcerative colitis, coughs, sores, snakebite, and asthma. The major component is boswellic acid, which has been shown in animals to be a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor with anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects. In mice it was shown to markedly reduce the production of the pro-inflammatory key cytokine TNF-a and the chemokine MCP-1.
  4. ILEX (Ilex pubescens), the root extract purified saponin fraction, has been used for anti-inflammatory diseases in traditional eastern medicine. Studies demonstrate its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects result from its reduction of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) protein expression. It also markedly inhibits production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha, while enhancing production of the anti-inflammatory cytokines of IL-4 and IL-10. Studies in mice demonstrate a molecular mechanism for the suppression of pro-inflammatory proteins and an increased production of anti-inflammatory proteins.
  5. COMFREY (Symphytum officinale), is used for wounds and to reduce inflammation from injured muscle, tendon and ligaments. It has also been used for osteoarthritis and back pain. The roots contain allantoin, a substance that has been shown to help speed new skin cell production.
The vasodilating effects of menthol facilitate and enhance the absorption of Pramoxine and the other natural anti-inflammatory substances in MyoGesic-CS. As a result of this increased local absorption process, MyoGesic-CS seems to provide pain relief in a manner similar to that obtained through Mesotherapy. Mesotherapy is a pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatment technique which was developed in1952 by the French physician Dr. Michel Pistor. It is taught in French medical schools and more than 15,000 French physicians currently utilize this technique for their patients suffering from inflammatory diseases and injury. It has gained acceptance and is widely used by veterinarians in the United States to treat similar conditions in horses. It promotes the body's own circulatory, lymphatic, and immune system to speed and improve the healing process as well as reduce pain. The treatment involves the subcutaneous injection of ultra low doses of medications and/or natural anti-inflammatory substances. The low doses of medications used in Mesotherapy produces increased benefits when compared to methods that require much higher doses of daily pain pills and/or injections. Usually, there are numerous injection sites within the desired area. As a result of these subcutaneous injections, the absorption times for these substances is dramatically increased. In this manner their effects are prolonged and may even be increased. Anesthetics, it is believed, interfere with the spinal pain reflex arc when used in the Mesotherapy injection solution. This process would explain the pain relief experienced by patients with deep muscle, tendon, bone and ligament injury. Mesotherapy-like treatments therefore, such as the topical application of MyoGesic-CS, are ideally suited for the management of many painful, inflammatory conditions in horses and dogs.

In conclusion, MyoGesic-CS is a unique formulation of Menthol, Pramoxine HCL, and the natural anti-inflammatories Arnica, MSM, Boswella, ILEX, and Comfrey. The combination of these substances produces a profound anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect when applied topically as directed. MyoGesic-CS may be used as an aide to help decrease the pain and inflammation from strain or injury involving tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints in horses and dogs.
